Lost in Us by Layla Hagen - Book Review

*New Adult Contemporary Romance*

Serena has learned to live with her past, locking her secrets and nightmares deep inside her. But when her boyfriend of six years abruptly leaves her, she’s catapulted back into pain, nursing a broken heart. When indulging in mountains of chocolate doesn’t work, Serena decides the best way to deal with her shattered heart is to indulge in something else. A rebound . . .

The night she swaps her usual Sprite for tequila, she meets James. The encounter is breathtaking.

Electrifying.
And best not repeated.

James is a successful entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. A man who has amassed a fortune by taking risks. A man who has shunned commitment completely, and still does. He’s the exact opposite of Serena. But sometimes opposites attract. Sometimes they give in to burning passion. Sometimes opposites are perfect for each other.

James is everything her damaged soul could want. His kisses are intoxicating, his touch out of this world. He makes her forget. He grants her peace from her pain. But as they grow closer, Serena discovers she isn’t the only one with a past. James carries the scars of a past much darker than hers. One that has left him damaged, hurt, and wary of love. A past that gives him the power to shatter her.

Now James and Serena must find a way to mend one another. Or risk losing each other forever.

my review -
Serena and James had suffered a tremendous lost that have changed their lives – both of them had tried to cope with it in different ways but still trying to live through the pain.

Serena’s boyfriend of six years had suddenly abandoned her and she’s currently nursing her broken heart. She tries to divert her attention by exhausting herself into finding jobs, putting more hours in her studies, and eating chocolates – when all of it didn’t work out, she decided on the next best thing, find herself a rebound.

Problem is, her rebound, bounced back into something else. She meets James – handsome, successful, and rich. Their time together – it was epic. But James too has some baggage from his past, and relationships, and its complications were not on his to-do list.

He might have gained his fortune in taking risks, but commitment wasn’t one of them. Serena might spark something within him – but he was still afraid to put his heart on the line. He can give her everything she wants, everything she desires – but there is one thing she desperately wants, and he just couldn’t give it to her.

I watched the two of them circled around their feelings, testing waters, going back and forth, there was something special between the two of them. You can feel it, you can sense it, but these two are just stubborn. Just as when I thought everything was going to be okay, someone is going to mess it up, and the one step they gained, they will move three steps back.  It was almost frustrating.

I was waiting for James’ POV – I wanted to get inside his brain, see what he is thinking, wanting to know what is wrong and what is needed to be done. I wanted so much to understand him – why he’s being hot and then cold?

It was a long journey for this two broken souls. It gets frustrating at times, but my patience was rewarded at the end of the novel. I always believe that words are important in letting people know how much you care about them – but in this case, words aren’t needed. He had moved mountain and earth to prove to her that she was special. People had to knock some senses into Serena for her to see it – and good thing she did before she lost the best thing that ever happened in her life. If Serena didn’t want him – I DO! This guy have proved in so many ways that he was a hopeless case against this girll!

Me, staying up in the wee hours of the morning, finishing reading this was worth it. Lost in Us is a story of two broken souls finally found healing, comfort and love in each other’s arms.
