Book Review | After We Fall by Marquita Valentine (@marquitaval)

25775915

After winning raves for Take the Fall (“crackling with tension, intrigue, and romance”—Katy Evans) and When We Fall (“sexy, emotional, heartfelt”—Monica Murphy), Marquita Valentine ratchets up the tension as new beginnings lead to undeniable passion.

A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wants—and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. Determined to do right by a woman who’s gone through hell and back, Hunter could be the one to take away the pain—so long as his own secrets don’t sink their relationship before it begins.

Having escaped an abusive marriage, Evangeline simply wants to start over in the small, quiet town of Forrestville. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to men—not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hard—or temptation this hot.

Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

I read this the moment it was up on my Kindle. Thank goodness for ARCs, I don’t have to wait that long and suffer the anticipation of getting the next book in this series.

Hunter Sloane had wanted Evangeline Ambrose ever since he saw her – imperfections, and all. Now that they are neighbors, he knew he needed to go slow with her and make her see and feel that she’s safe with him. He wanted to prove to her that she can trust him, that he won’t do anything to hurt her. But what if she discovers his secrets? Would she still stay with him? Or will it make her run away?

Evangeline valued her freedom after escaping from an abusive marriage. She wanted to have a fresh start somewhere. And a small, quiet town was the perfect place to it. Dating or even being around the opposite sex wasn’t really high on her agenda. But the cop next door was another story. He was good to her. He made her feel safe – but is it enough for her to trust him and once again risk everything?

I loved this book, and pretty much fell so hard for the characters, especially for Hunter. He can be an alpha all he wants, but he always makes sure to make Evangeline feel comfortable and safe. He matches her pace and never complains. He has his moments, but he was just perfect. Evangeline is a strong, strong woman who has withstood everything that was thrown at her. Now, she was brave enough to stand up on her two feet and fight for the life she deserves. I love their budding romance – it wasn’t cheesy. They didn’t have those petty quarrels and overwhelming drama we read most of the time in books – instead, they do what mature people do and talk it out (at least most of the time). They do have a pinch or two of drama between the two of them, but they always settle it out with their talks.

So far, Marquita Valentine had me hooked in the first two books of TAKETHE FALL series and continued up to the third one. A tough, hot cop with a mysterious past, and a vulnerable woman collided in this wonderfully crafted love story – about second chances in love and in life.

And here comes another love story that I’d be waiting for: Saylor’s. I’m excited to read her HEA next!!!
